a hobby operating system
Keter is the root directory. Malchut is your downloads folder. The login screen is a gate called Gevurah, and it will turn you away if you don't know the word.

KabbalOS is a real operating system, not a theme or a shell script pretending to be one. It's a 32-bit kernel written from scratch in C, booted through GRUB and the Multiboot standard, with its own keyboard driver, its own file system, and its own login screen. There's no Linux hiding underneath it.
The idea was simple: what if the Tree of Life wasn't a decoration on top of an operating system, but the operating system's actual architecture? So the root directory really is called Keter, your downloads really do live in a folder named Malchut, and the boundary between "logged out" and "logged in" really is a component named after Gevurah, Severity — the sefirah of judgment and restraint.
Boots to a login screen before anything else is reachable. It will ask you twice, and it will turn you away if you're wrong.
A real command line once you're through the gate: ls, cd, mkdir, rm, cat, tree to see the whole Tree of Life at once, and a few more besides.
Open and edit files without leaving the shell. Ctrl+O saves, Ctrl+X exits — a small, honest first cut, no cursor-arrow navigation yet.
An assistant you can ask questions from the shell. Today it answers from a small local rule set; talking to a real language model over the network is planned, not pretended.
The newest addition: a Windows-95-styled desktop, complete with a taskbar, a Start menu, a beveled terminal window, and a mouse cursor that actually moves.
This is an early, in-progress hobby project, and it's more interesting to say so than to pretend otherwise.
Build the kernel with a standard 32-bit GCC toolchain — no cross-compiler required.
make
Run it directly in QEMU. The fast path boots straight to text mode; building a GRUB ISO and booting that gets you the full graphical desktop.
make run
At the Gevurah gate, log in as adam with the password kadmon, and you're home.
